In this album, Yun Shouping, following a common practice, painted landscapes, plants, and rocks in the style of venerated masters of the Song (960–1279) and Yuan (1260–1368) dynasties, albeit with his own unique approach. Yun’s “boneless” ink-wash style is evident here in his casual sketches of peony and lotus flowers. In these paintings, Yun dispensed with ink outlines, the so-called bones, and instead drew the forms in transparent colors, applying layers of wash to delineate the edges. In his landscape, rock, and tree motifs, dry-ink texture strokes help define the surfaces and stand in contrast to the dark ink lines and dots that highlight the bamboo and foliage.
