Caricature of Gustave Perdonnet,

1867

Etienne Carjat, French, 1828–1906
2012-5
By 1854, Carjat had emerged as a journalist, publisher, and fashionable caricaturist of cutting wit. His drawings, lithographs, cultural reviews, and—after 1858—distinctive portrait photography centered on the political and literary personalities of his time. The subject of this portrait charge drawing is Gustave Perdonnet (1822–1913), the younger brother of Auguste Perdonnet, a famed railroad engineer from Lausanne, Switzerland. Pictured in front of his family home, Gustave holds a toy horse by a string—a double allusion to both the fame of his brother and his own status as the youngest in the family.
