Arnold Chang (Zhang Hong 張洪), born 1954, New York, NY; active New York
Michael Cherney (Qiu Mai 秋麥), born 1969, New York, NY; active Beijing, China
2012-20
Works by these two artists were included in Outside In, a 2009 exhibition at this Museum that focused on the breakdown of geographical categories for artists in modern times. Although each has an international reputation as a “Chinese artist,” both Chang and Cherney were born in the United States, and their work is often considered to be American. Following Outside In, the two began collaborating: Cherney produces photographs that Chang extends in painting. This joint exploration demonstrates the flexible boundaries of various media as well as the artists’ capacity for creating works that appear to merge almost seamlessly. Here they are paying homage to Li Sixun, a late seventh- to early eighth-century painter known for his complex and colorful landscapes.
