His and Hers Vase: Bridge and Sample,
2006

Woodman’s sculptures embrace the play between terms—such as lip, neck, foot, and belly—that describe both ceramic vessels and the human body. This pair of vases belong to the artist’s long-running series in which two works are presented together as related counterparts, often differentiated by gender. Each vessel is made from two slabs of clay: one with bright colors and a reflective glaze and the other with muted colors and a matte-textured surface of unglazed clay onto which figures are painted. The vases are containers, but the differences between the sides of each vase suggest masking or costume, lending the representations a theatrical air.
