Fisherman's House (Fischerhaus),

1908

Gabriele Münter, 1877–1962; born Berlin, Germany; died Murnau (am Staffelsee), Germany
2012-23
The fisherman’s house, with boats drawn up on the shore, must have been a familiar sight at Murnau, a town on Lake Staffel where Münter owned a house. The haystacks characterize this as an agricultural region, but Münter’s landscapes in this period are curiously deserted, although always with signs of human habitation. It has been suggested that the lack of people in her compositions reflects the isolated life that Münter, Kandinsky, and their artist friends led in Murnau. Indeed, the New Artists Association Munich was concerned with the promotion of avant-garde expression rather than engagement with social themes.
