Rhubarb, Sèvres,

1852–53

Louis-Rémy Robert, French, 1811–1882
2012-51
Like generations of porcelain craftsmen before him, Robert lived and labored at the royal Sèvres factory near Paris. Having worked his way through the ranks, he eventually became director of the factory’s painting studio. Although Robert made a number of large-format photographs of the finished products, he was most intrigued by portraiture and nature studies. Rhubarb, Sèvres, like many of Robert’s photographs, is known only as a negative, and it may be that the artist made no prints from it.
