The Boat-Studio,
1861
Charles François Daubigny, 1817–1878; born Paris, France; died Paris
x1937-19 l bis
The landscape painter Daubigny was an early champion of working directly from nature. In the summer of 1856 he bought a boat that he converted into a floating studio with living quarters. Exploring the Seine, Oise, and Marne Rivers, Daubigny would scout out interesting motifs to paint and sketch en plein air from his small, box-like studio in the back of the boat. A skilled printmaker, Daubigny commemorated one such trip in a charming portfolio of fifteen etchings, including this evocative self-portrait, which shows him busily at work, surrounded by kitchen utensils and artist’s supplies.
