Head of a Putto,

1527–37

Domenico Beccafumi, 1484–1551; born Cortine in Valdibiana Montaperti, Italy; died Siena, Italy
x1948-606
Beccafumi was a highly individual and inventive artist who developed an independent style inspired by a variety of sources while working almost exclusively in Siena during the first half of the sixteenth century. The two oil sketches on the left demonstrate his fluid technique and subtle manipulation of light and shade to create lively head studies. The dark background accentuates these effects, intensifying the appearance of small highlights. These sheets belong to a group of twenty-three surviving works closely related in date and style to his vibrant frescoes in the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena, a commission awarded to him in 1529.
