James Welling, American, born 1951
2012-147
Throughout his artistic career, Welling has pushed the limits of visual representation through an exploration of photographic techniques. To make this image, he placed flower petals directly onto a sheet of 8 x 10 film and exposed it to light. Using a color mural enlarger and various color filters, he then projected the negative onto special paper. This complex, inventive process allowed Welling to capture the dramatic and atmospheric effects of light on a two-dimensional surface. His fascination with "what can happen with a sheet of paper" results in a surprising photographic aesthetic based on experimental processes.
