More Context

At the same time that orange and black became known as Princeton's colors, the tiger emerged as the University's mascot. In 1911 this pair of tigers replaced the lions that had guarded the entrance to Nassau Hall since 1889. Proctor traveled with a circus for weeks, sketching and studying the tiger after which these bronze sculptures are modeled.
