John Beasley Greene, American, 1832–1856

Despite his early death at the age of twenty-four, Greene was the first Egyptologist and trained photographer to document the Middle East, where he undertook his inaugural expedition at the age of twenty-one. Between 1853 and 1854, Greene aimed to photograph notable landmarks and landscapes along the Nile River; the resulting images remain remarkable today for their vast areas of empty space that emphasize the scale of the monuments, as seen here.
