The Riviera,
ca. 1925
Arthur Bowen Davies, 1862–1928; born Utica, NY; died Florence, Italy
1997-473
Best known for his symbolist-inspired Arcadian landscapes, the painter and designer Arthur B. Davies was also the prime mover of the Armory Show of 1913, which introduced American audiences to a selective sampling of modernist art. This lyrical watercolor of specific French settings date from late in Davies’s career, when he traveled frequently to southern Europe for health reasons. Like most of his watercolors from this period, this is composed over colored paper, which intensifies the cool effects of the overcast sky in the beach scene.
