Lotte Jacobi, 1896–1990; born Toruń, West Prussia (Poland); died Concord, NH; active Berlin, Germany, and New York, NY
2014-4
Jacobi studied photography and film at the Bavarian State Academy of Photography and the University of Munich before taking over her father’s photographic studio in Berlin, where she established her reputation as a virtuoso of the celebrity portrait. Outside of her commercial practice, Jacobi experimented with new approaches to photography and composition. This bird’s-eye view renders the convivial scene of an outdoor café in Berlin into a vertiginous pattern of paving stones, circular tabletops, and summer hats to emphasize the unusual perspectives offered by the rising building heights of the modern city.
