Les Forçats (The Convicts),

1820

Horace Vernet, 1789–1863; born and died Paris, France
Printed by François Delpech, French, 1778–1825
x1954-142
Although little known today, Vernet was one of the most celebrated history painters to emerge in France following the Revolution. Born to an illustrious family of eighteenth-century artists, Vernet rejected the classical traditions championed by the French Academy and painted contemporary scenes of military history and culture in a dramatic, naturalist style. Like Delacroix and Géricault, as a printmaker he embraced the recently invented medium of lithography, a relatively high-speed process first favored by commercial printers and publishers.
