Sudarium held by two angels,

1513

Albrecht Dürer, 1471–1528; born and died Nuremberg, Germany; active Venice, Italy, and Nuremburg
x1956-30
Although Dürer made several celebrated series of Passion engravings, this related image of Christ’s head crowned with thorns is a stand-alone print; the artist gave many impressions of it to friends and patrons. As one of Dürer’s followers first noticed, Christ’s frontal gaze bears striking similarity to the artist’s celebrated self-portrait of 1500, now in Munich.
