In Memoriam,

1939

John Taylor Arms, 1887–1953; born Washington, D.C.; died Fairfield, CT
Printed by David Strang, born 1887, Dumbarton, Scotland
x1957-93
Arms produced over four hundred etchings, mostly of medieval architectural subjects, throughout his career. The artist first spent hours meticulously drawing his subjects on-site, before transferring the outlines of his designs to prepared copper plates in the workshop. Then, working under magnification and referring to photographs, he painstakingly incised the precise details of his compositions into the copper with sewing needles. A large plate such as In Memoriam could take Arms more than two thousand hours to complete.
