Urban Landscapes
The artists of the FAP looked as much toward the changing landscape of the urban present as the picturesque rural past.
Graphic Arts Division artists depicted their local environment, capturing the modernity of urban life in New York. In several of these works modern modes of transportation feature prominently—cars parked along Columbus Circle or stopped to refill gas on Hudson Street. Harry Sternberg’s Night Flight is a testament to the scale of modern technology, framing the silhouette of a man with a massive ascending airplane and the rising skyscraper-studded skyline of the city in the distance. Artists turned their interest in urban life from the city’s inhabitants toward the architectural forms of New York.
