You Belong Here: Place, People, and Purpose in Latinx Photography
February 11—May 7, 2023
You Belong Here: Place, People, and Purpose in Latinx Photography celebrates the dynamic visions of Latina/o/x/e photographers from across the United States. Art on Hulfish is the first venue for this exhibition, which brings together both established artists and a new generation of image makers who address themes of political resistance, family and community, fashion and culture, and the complexity of identity in American life.
Included in the exhibition are Hiram Maristany's portraits of resilience and joy in 1960s East Harlem, Star Montana's depiction of family bonds across generations and histories of migration, Reynaldo Rivera's photographs of 1990s Los Angeles nightlife, and Sofía Córdova's film installation about labor and collectivity. Joiri Minaya remixes vintage postcards from the Dominican Republic to unveil the fantasy of tourism, and Genesis Báez crafts gestural portraits of the contemporary Puerto Rican diaspora. The artists featured connect a lineage of photographers, each championing their community through their own distinct and generative gaze. Exhibition curator Pilar Tompkins Rivas explains, "Collectively, their images cast a greater net for the multiple ways of seeing Latinx people, creating a visual archive whose edges are yet to be defined." The exhibition extends from Tompkins Rivas's work as guest editor of "Latinx," the Winter 2021 issue of Aperture magazine.
