Sound in the Mountains,
2010
Wang Mansheng 王满晟, born 1962, Taiyuan, China; active New York, NY
2014-150
Quietness and tranquility form the subject of this small landscape. Surrounded by mountain peaks, a waterfall is seen at the center. The artist notes, "The tranquility in my work tries to give the viewer immediate respite and peace from the noise and commotion in this life. It happens at the very instant of seeing my painting. As for Sound in the Mountains, if you can hear the roar of the cascade, that is the sound of silence—an absence of sound. The sound that can be heard is not the heard sound."
