The Lime-Burner,

1859

James McNeill Whistler, 1834–1903; born Lowell, MA; died London, England; active England and Paris, France
x1969-208
In his etchings, the American expatriate painter, printmaker, and designer James McNeill Whistler was fond of depicting casual views of the people he found in the ramshackle shops and open doorways of the working-class neighborhoods nestled along the banks of the River Thames. Combining the linear spontaneity of a sketch with a deep admiration for Japanese woodcuts, Whistler’s innovative prints helped to spark an etching revival among British painters in the 1860s, a full decade before the advent of French Impressionism.
