Mademoiselle Marcel Lender,
1895
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, 1864–1901; born Albi, France; died Château de Malromé, Saint-André-du-Bois, France
x1964-19
This lithograph, one of many images that Toulouse-Lautrec made of the popular Parisian dancer and actress Marcelle Lender, reveals several strategies borrowed from Japanese woodcuts, including the juxtaposition of flat areas of color and layers of decorative patterning. The close-up depiction of a beautiful woman in profile recalls Japanese images of actors and geishas. For his signature, the artist adapted Japanese publishers’ circular stamps, here reimagined with the three letters of his monogram: H T L.
