This leaf comes from the fi rst Bible printed in the city of Nuremberg in the early years of book publishing. Published by Anton Koberger (1440/45–1513) in German rather than Latin and incorporating woodcuts originally made for a Bible published in Cologne in 1478, the deluxe edition of Koberger’s Bible features hand-colored illustrations in a style reminiscent of medieval manuscript illumination, with generalized, broadly delineated fi gures acting out the narrative in a compressed pictographic space. This leaf illustrates an episode from the Book of Judges, in which Gideon demands proof of the existence of God, who has chosen him to deliver Israel from oppression.
