The intertwined arabesques of Mucha’s elaborate poster designs epitomize the Art Nouveau style fashionable in Paris at the turn of the century. Born in Czechoslovakia and trained as a decorative artist in Munich, Mucha moved to Paris in 1887, and by the end of the century he had established a successful career as an influential painter and graphic designer. Mucha received several commissions to design posters, displays, and exhibition halls for the Paris Exposition of 1900—a World’s Fair celebrating the cultural achievements of the previous century. Chief among these was a prestigious commission for a series of murals for the Pavilion of Bosnia and Herzegovina, territories seized from Ottoman rule by the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1878.
