Still Life with Bread Molds,

1972

Claudio Bravo, 1936–2011; born Valparaíso, Chile; died Taroudant, Morocco; active Madrid, Spain and Tangier, Morocco
x1972-41
While becoming a society portrait painter in Madrid in the 1960s, Bravo applied his illusionistic style to depictions of crumpled paper, paper-wrapped packages, and draped cloth. These became his principal focus when he moved permanently to Morocco in 1972. Drawn in that year, this enigmatic still life features a crumpled package surrounded by indigenous wooden domestic objects, including spindles and bread molds. Bravo’s heightened realist style derived inspiration from various sources, including seventeenth-century Spanish artists like Diego Velázquez and Francisco de Zurbarán.
