Ranchos de Taos Church,
1930
Laura Gilpin, 1891–1979; born Colorado Springs, CO; died Santa Fe, NM; active Arizona and New Mexico
x1973-96
Gilpin was one of many artists who chose this mission church in northern New Mexico as a subject for her art. She became interested in the historical and contemporary cultures of the Southwest around 1924 and thereafter began chronicling the area’s people and land. Ranchos de Taos became a particularly popular destination after the American painter Joseph Henry Sharp began a Society of Artists there in the early 1900s. With the help of Sharp’s organization, this church later became one of the most painted and photographed buildings in the world, with depictions by such artists as Paul Strand, Ansel Adams, and Georgia O’Keeffe.
