Inscribed upper left: “天外之天,水中之水,笔中之笔,墨外之墨,非高人逸品, 不能得之,不能知之。” 醇士。[“The sky beyond sky, water within water, brush within brush, ink beyond ink, [these] are not extraordinary traits that [even] talented persons [can achieve]. They cannot be reached; they cannot be known.” Chunshi (i.e., Dai Xi)] “天外之天 . . . 不能知之” cites a painting colophon by Yun Shouping 惲壽平 (1633-1690)
