In this photograph, which was not included in the published Life article, Isabel leans against her family’s shack in a garbage-strewn and open-sewage alleyway—unsanitary conditions that contributed to the multiple diseases afflicting the inhabitants of Catacumba. The essay itself generated an enormous response from Life readers, galvanizing the public to send enough money for the da Silva family to move out of the favela and to pay for Flavio’s medical treatment in the United States.
