Landscape with a Church and Mules on a Path,

ca. 1693–95

Jacob de Heusch, 1656/57–1701; born Utrecht, Netherlands; died Amsterdam, Netherlands
2019-454
A brightly lit donkey and a dog lapping well water occupy the shadowed foreground of this scene, while austere buildings appear in the sunny, airy distance. As a young man, De Heusch spent seventeen years in Italy before returning to his native Utrecht. The geometric forms of the buildings in this intimate, idyllic landscape incorporate the visual vocabulary of French and Italian painters working in Rome, while the meticulous detail and dark palette reflect De Heusch’s northern roots.
