In 2011, Klett and Wolfe retraced via boat the route that photographer Eliot Porter (1901–1990) had hiked along the Colorado River, prior to the opening of the Glen Canyon Dam in 1963. The Sierra Club published Porter’s photographs in protest of the environmental effects of the dam, which completely flooded the river’s natural ecosystem. As a result of drought caused by climate change, geological landmarks are again partially visible above the waterline, allowing Klett and Wolfe to identify and photograph some of the same sites Porter had captured. Porter's images span the bottom register, while images from Klett and Wolfe’s journey are shown above—each mapped in relation to the contemporary water level—documenting the destructive impact of human intervention on the natural environment.
