Inaccessible Island Rail from the Exotic Bird series,
1977
Frank Stella, 1936–2024, born Malden, MA; active and died New York, NY
x1978-2
Since his graduation from Princeton in 1958, Frank Stella has become universally recognized as one of the most important American artists of the last fifty years. Throughout his career, Stella has vigorously tested the formal and physical possibilities of abstract art, eliminating traditional representational references to accentuate the creative process in his innovative painting and print series. He titled the prints of his Exotic Bird Series after rare birds from around the world, while deriving the exotic shapes in these compositions from antique drafting templates.
