An independently wealthy writer and amateur photographer, Du Camp traveled throughout Egypt and the Near East in the company of the novelist Gustave Flaubert in 1849–51. After returning to France, Du Camp published an account of their travels, complete with 125 photographs documenting the ancient ruins they encountered. The volume brought the photographer instant fame—and his readers some of their first glimpses of these fabled temples, monuments, and tombs.
