Abbott made this photograph from the top of what was then called 60 Wall Tower (now the American International Building), looking northeast across Manhattan’s financial district. When Abbott photographed 60 Wall, the building was six years old and the third tallest in the world; it remained the highest in downtown Manhattan until the construction of the World Trade Center. The area visible in Abbott’s view changed very little between 1938 and 1967, when Danny Lyon made many photographs along Gold Street and other thoroughfares that are visible in Abbott’s image.
