Description
The Water-moon Guanyin Bodhisattva (水月觀音菩薩) was worshipped for its ability to prevent calamity and disease and protect travelers. This painting shows the bodhisattva in three-quarter view, seated on a rocky outcropping above the waves. At lower left stands the boy acolyte Sudhana (C: Shancai Tongzi善財童子), whose encounter with the deity as recounted in the Avatamsaka (Flower Adornment) Sutra may be the textual source for this iconographic type, which had a Chinese prototype but was also popular in Korea during the Goryeo period.
