Triptych: Biblical Scenes with texts from the Ordinary of the Roman Mass
Antonio de Comontes, Spanish, active 1527–1536
y1953-49
The owner of this three-winged altarpiece probably carried it when traveling. The texts come from the Roman Catholic Mass. On the left wing is “Gloria in Excelsis,” a hymn beginning with the words sung by the angels at Jesus’s birth. On the right wing is the Nicene Creed, a profession of faith drafted at the ecumenical Council of Nicaea in a.d. 325. On the central panel are the words pronounced by the priest upon the elevation of the host, the moment in the Mass when it becomes the sacrificial body of Christ. The ritual reenacts the words and actions of Jesus at the Last Supper—illustrated in the adjacent image—and refers to his sacrifice on the cross, depicted in the Crucifixion scene above.
