To create this suite of etchings, LeWitt printed fields of parallel lines in varied, overlapping combinations. The result is a series of nine squares divided into different segments that gradate from darkly inked paper to areas of unprinted white. Adhering to a set of strictures derived from a consistent, geometric format, these etchings demonstrate heterogeneous results within apparently rigid constraints. The etching displayed on the adjacent wall recapitulates the process used to create the work as a whole but at a smaller scale. Serving as something like an index, this etching echoes approaches to seriality and the documentation of process in Darboven’s art.
