Saint Engracia,

1450–1500

The Armisen Master, Spanish, active second half of 15th century
Aragon School
y1960-32
Saint Engracia, an early Christian martyr from Zaragossa, is depicted sitting upon a magnificent throne. Her garments demonstrate a taste for lavish gold decoration such as the raised gilded details on the edges of her cape and the tooling of the halo. In contrast to her serene pose, she bears the sign of her torture—a nail in her forehead. She also holds a palm, a symbol of her status as a martyr.
