During the Roman Catholic Mass, participants offer each other a kiss of peace. A pax (Latin for peace) is a small tablet or plate used to convey the kiss of peace from the celebrant of the Mass to those attending it, by passing the plate for each to kiss in turn. Subjects illustrated can vary; this example represents the Virgin and Child enthroned with angels.
