California Headlands,
1917
George Wesley Bellows, 1882–1925; born Columbus, OH; died, New York, NY; active New York, NY
y1968-203
Although best known for vibrant depictions of boxing and New York urban life, Bellows was a committed landscape artist throughout his brief career. In 1917, he accepted a portrait commission in California and settled for the summer at the artist’s colony of Carmel-by-the-Sea, in Monterey County. The swirling, abstracted California Headlands accords with both the artist’s characteristic muscular style and the striking coastal subject.
