Gorky’s approach is characterized by his integration of drawing and painting and his diverse strategies of mark-making, as seen here in the layers of carefully articulated patterns and gestural sketches overlaid on areas of ink wash. Having escaped the Armenian genocide, Gorky joined his father in Boston in 1920. Later that decade, he moved to New York, where he became part of an artistic community of fellow émigré artists.
