Little is definitively known about this appealing view of Natural Bridge, a geological formation of Cedar Creek in Virginia’s aptly named Rockbridge County. Renowned since the mid-eighteenth century as one of America’s principal natural wonders, the site was surveyed by George Washington and once owned by Thomas Jefferson. The painting was donated to Princeton by the daughter of Frank Jewett Mather, a former professor and museum director who believed the work may originally have formed part of a decorative scheme on a nineteenth-century steamship.
