This mixed album includes images of Daoist immortals as well as pictures of flowers and insects painted in a playful and innovative manner. In his early career, Huang Shen excelled at cursive calligraphy and later became better known as an individualist painter. He is usually counted among the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou, a group of artists active in the eighteenth century who rejected orthodox painting practices and developed expressive personal styles.
