William Henry Hilliard, American, 1836–1905

Hilliard is best known for realistic, tonal landscapes that are evocative of the Hudson River School. Born in Auburn, New York, he studied and lived for several years in Paris, where he exhibited at the Paris Salon and depicted local scenery, evident in this landscape, painted near Barbizon.
