Description
By the reign of the Kangxi Emperor (r. 1662-1722) ceramic arts in China had long since attained a level of sophistication and technical mastery that was unrivaled. Yet, ceramic artists of the Kangxi period still managed to attain dazzling new heights of achievement and could produce whatever their creative impulses, and the desires of their patrons, dictated. This included a fine dark purple glaze referred to as “aubergine” in hue, which was popularly paired with green, yellow, and white glazes. The latter trio of colors was an visual connection immediately recognizable from the famed three-color sancai glazes of the Tang dynasty (618-907).
