Deposition from the Cross
Juan de Borgoña, Spanish, active 1495–1536
y1983-44
The long thin shape of this painting identifies it as one of a pair of organ shutters, meant to be seen from a vantage point far below the organ loft of a church. The organ could be opened or closed as needed by means of the shutters. Coming into widespread use in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, organs were played during church feasts but also could be closed off at times when instrumental music was not deemed appropriate.
