Lavender Evening,

1970

Alice Baber, American, 1928–1982
y1983-35
To make Lavender Evening, Baber poured diluted oil paint directly onto the canvas, a technique known as stain painting. The thin paint absorbs into the canvas and creates the impression of pools of transparent color. Baber traveled widely, drawing inspiration from several international styles of abstract painting. In 1964, she was invited by Gutai, a group of experimental Japanese artists, to visit Osaka as part of a residency meant to spur conversation about abstract art between American and Japanese artists.
