View of Santiago de Cuba,

1864

Henry Cleenewerck, 1825–1901; born Watou, Belgium; died Brussels, Belgium
y1983-32

Cleenewerck’s view of Santiago, on the southeastern coast of Cuba, foregrounds lush pastures dotted with cattle, farm buildings, palms, and banana trees, and relegates the city’s bustling port to the background. Cleenewerck worked in Cuba for five years in the 1860s, painting European-style landscapes for colonists living on the island. He moved back to Europe in 1868 and established a studio in Paris, where he continued to paint Cuban views for European consumption.
