1905
Wassily Kandinsky, 1866–1944; born Moscow, Russian Empire (Russia); died Neuilly-sur-Seine, France
y1986-76
This is one of the small outdoor sketches Kandinsky created during his travels with Gabriele Münter during the early years of their relationship. Sestri is located on the Ligurian coast of Italy, near Portofino and the Cinque Terre. The artist used a palette knife to spread the thickly textured paint, capturing the pale light of the Mediterranean winter or early spring.
