Untitled (fisherman by a stream)

Camille Bombois, French, 1883–1970
y1990-35
The son of a bargeman turned railway worker, Bombois left school at the age of twelve. Following stints as a wrestler and a circus strongman, he settled in Paris in 1907. He worked first as a metro laborer or transporter of newsprint by night and a painter by day; later, he supported himself solely through his art, living in the country. Bombois painted scenes from his earlier life, including this canal, which he remembered from days on the family barge.
