Saint Peter,
mid-14th century
Circle of Nardo di Cione, Italian, ca. 1320–1365/6
y1994-64
The pointed-arch frame of this fragment indicates that it originally served as a gable of an altarpiece. Viewers would have instantly recognized Saint Peter, depicted with a book and holding the keys given to him by Jesus with the charge, “I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. . .” (Matthew 16:19).
