Mary Fairchild Low, American, 1858–1946

Although not as well known as her first husband, sculptor William Frederick MacMonnies, Mary Fairchild Low achieved success as an artist at a time when women enjoyed increasing opportunities to receive artistic training and show their work in prestigious exhibitions. After marrying artist Will Low in 1909, Low spent several summers in an art colony at Gloucester, Massachusetts; this painting of the town’s harbor retains the bright, impressionistic color palette she adopted while living in Giverny, France, the home of Claude Monet.
